Good Morning Superlatives,
Can something ever be the “BEST?” The BEST movie. The BEST pizza. The BEST vacation. Is anyone even qualified to make that distinction? If a person is qualified how can they be sure that they have tried all the examples of whatever it is they are deeming the best. And if they have tried all the examples, who’s to say that a new one is not being created at the same time they are making their proclamation. Not only is it completely subjective, but rating something the best can also be exclusionary and even dangerous. Only the best deserve the best... We are the best country... Our race is the best... It feeds the "us" and “them” attitude that is the background music of poverty - strife - and war.
“It’s the best I’ve ever had” would be a much more accurate way of rating a item’s “Bestness.” You are the only person that can make that statement and no one can argue your point. I have a joke that I tell all the time - let’s say at breakfast someone will pronounce... “Here Andy, try some of this cantaloupe - It’s the best." I try some and say with mock enthusiasm “Wow that’s the BEST cantaloupe I’ve had all day” Remember it’s early in the day and I haven’t had any cantaloupe yet. Another version is “Wow this is the BEST Formula One race car I’ve sat in all day.” I’ve never sat in a Formula One race car. I don’t even know what a Formula One Race Car is. This will work on most things but it won’t prevent the damage obtained by applying the BEST label to Religion - Country - God - Race - Creed. That was the BEST hot dog I’ve ever had is OK. Caucasians are the BEST race of people I have ever known - is not.
I feel that the over abundance of choices is one of the reasons Americans are so infatuated with the idea of something or someone being the BEST. If there were only one flavor of Ice-Cream, there would be no question as to which is the BEST one. You’d just order “Ice Cream.” We have become so affluent as a society that not only do we want the most of everything, we also want it to be the BEST. Some feel as if they deserve the best, another subjective call. You have to have choices in order to rate something the BEST. and you have to be affluent to have choices.
If you can’t choose your own government - then the type of system you live under becomes the BEST in the world. There might be hundreds of choices, but for a host of geo-political reasons - most people are stuck where they are. Growing up I used to be confused by the statement I heard adults say all the time - America... The BEST country in the world - Christianity - The ONLY way to go to heaven. How can one country be better than another. How can you limit the power of God by saying there is only ONE way to get to heaven. By limiting our choices the powers that be can continue to have us think that we are the BEST. And if you’re in the club that’s the best you get to make the rules.
Enjoy the good things in life - there is nothing wrong with quality, but don’t ever label something (be it religion type of government, or something as benign as waffles) the BEST. For you are limiting your life experience when you start to believe you seen and done it all and you’ll never again have as good experience as you did when you had such and such - the BEST. That’s crackhead logic - that’s crazy talk. I also remember that I have been guilty, on this blog, of calling something the BEST. These waffles for example. But, I do believe I said “BEST Waffles EVER,” Which is the same as saying the best waffles I’ve ever had - and that’s the BEST way of putting that.
END OF SUNDAY’S POST
just say yes!
meet Andy Ward King, a professional musician and artist until a diagnosis of parkinons dsease at age 49 forced him into an early retirement., he now uses his music, his art along with the whimsical world he has created in this blog as therapy to ( as he puts it ) outsmart his brain and make the daily battles with parkinson’s a little bit easier, to give him that all important reason to get up on the morning, to make his life worth living. Andy has learned how to say NO to gving up \ NO to depression and apathy \ NO to following willingly the road of decline that stretches before him. he learned that to say no to all of these things all one has to do is say yes. Andy has learned to just say YES to life/\\
